Over the last few years, we’ve seen a number of dragon themed slots crop up. This is possibly largely in part due to the success of the Smaug in The Hobbit movies, and of the dragons in the red-hot Game of Thrones series. Whatever the reason, dragons are in at the minute.
Yggdrasil has obviously taken that on-board with their latest fantasy themed video slot, Double Dragons. Graphically, the Double Dragons slot isn’t really any different from other Yggdrasil developed games. They have always done a stellar job with graphics.
Double Dragons two main dragons (the dragon of ice, and dragon of fire) play a large role in triggering special features in the game, but they do little for the story or theme. In fact, even after playing the game for a number of hours, we’re still not quite sure what story we’re supposed to understand, beyond there being a far-off land in which live two dragons.
Yggdrasil could have done better, by giving us a narrative to work with.
How to play it
Anybody who has had a crack at Yggdrasil slots before will know how this works. The simplistic and barebones wagering panel doesn’t allow you to alter the 5-reel slot’s 20 paylines, but you can choose coin values from 1p up to £5, and bet just 1 coin per line.
You’ll find a wagering range, which starts at an icy cold 20p per spin, but can rise up to a fiery hot £100 a go.
Truth be told – not a lot. The biggest weakness in this Yggdrasil developed slot is that players don’t really get good value for their money with winnings.
The wilds cannot pay you any prizes, which means that only standard paying symbols do. The best of these is a dragon’s eye (coloured purple), and you’re looking at wins worth 125 coins per line with that. Even then, you’ll need to line five on a line.

Wild symbols: There’s good news if you like wild symbols. There are two in Double Dragons. This is where the slot gets its name from. First up the Ice Dragon head symbol, and this can double any winnings in which it plays a role. Meanwhile the Fire Dragon head symbol can spread and add 2 to 3 extra wilds in random places on the reels. There are no scatters in this slot.
Free spins / Bonus features
Dropdown Win: Without scatters you will need another way to trigger bonus rounds. One such option is the Dropdown Win feature. This is triggered after you land any win in the game. Also known as avalanche or cascading reels in slots, the feature gives you a second chance to win more money with every winning spin.
Double Dragon feature: Players could prosper from 2 stacked wilds, if they are fortunate enough to land 4 Dropdown Wins in a row. It’s a big ask, but since the stacked wilds are super stacked, you have to believe you can do it just to experience this feature.
Free spins feature: And of course, no slot would be complete without a free spins bonus round. Double Dragons is no different. This slot contains one which is activated by accumulating 9 dragon head wild symbols on the reels. There is nothing overly complicated about this free spins feature, which offers you exactly what you might expect from such a round.
Double Dragons should be a real treat, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The video slot doesn’t push itself forward graphically, and its wins are rather on the cheap side. There are a few decent special features in this slot, but it can be hell on earth trying to trigger them. Even when they are activated, they tend to be over before they really begin.
Yggdrasil is going to have to regroup and improve after this slot. Yes, it contains many more features in its previous efforts, but they are a real challenge to enjoy. Double Dragons is a step in the right direction for the Scandinavian online casino software developer, but the slot is not quite good enough to warrant extended playing.
