How to bet?

In Face Up 21, like other blackjack table games, the player must decide how much they wish to bet, by choosing their chips, and placing them into the betting circle. Chips of 1.00, 5.00, 25.00, 100.00 and 500.00 in value are present. Most Face Up 21 tables have minimum and maximum stakes of 1.00 and 250.00 per hand, though; making the 500.00 chip rather redundant. With your bet placed, you can hit deal to begin gameplay.

How to play?

The player will be dealt two cards face up, and so will the dealer. From the moment that the cards land, you can see exactly what the dealer has to play with. Naturally, this means that there will be no insurance bets possible in Face Up 21. After you have had a good look at yours and the dealer’s hands, then it is time to make that all important decision.

Players can of course choose to hit or stand. However, they may also double-down on the first two cards with a value of 9, 10 or 11, and they can also split cards with the same value. Players may double-down after splitting, and can only re-split once, giving you a maximum of three hands. Players are not able to re-split aces. Surrender is also, not an option.

If you haven’t gone bust, once you are content with your hand (or hands), the dealer will make their move. The hands will then be compared against one another, to see who has won. Should the hands push, the dealer wins, unless the player has a blackjack. The dealer’s blackjack can never beat a player’s blackjack.

Pay-outs

Blackjack only pays out at 1:1 in this game. The reason for this is the same as in Double Exposure – to balance out the lack of an initial house edge. The dealer must stand on all hard 17s or soft 18s in Face Up 21.

Tips and Tricks

Face Up 21 uses eight decks of cards, which gives the house an edge of 0.85%. If it wasn’t for the eight decks, the player would have an even greater chance of winning, due to the exposed dealer cards. Given that the player can see the dealer’s card, always pay attention to what they have. Remember, a push is awarded to the dealer except in the case of a blackjack!

Overall Experience & Final Thoughts

So, the dealer wins pushes, blackjack only pays out at 1:1, and there are some tighter rules on doubling down and splitting. Yet, whilst this is all true, Face Up 21 is the only real game like this from RTG. Microgaming’s Double Exposure may be slightly fairer on the player than Face Up 21, but if you are playing in an RTG powered casino, this is as close as you’ll come to the same game.
